Dr. Arlette Lefebvre is a Child Psychiatrist on staff at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto (Faculty of Medicine), her medical school "alma mater", and is a consultant to the Bloorview MacMillan Centre, also in Toronto.
At the hospital, she is Director of the Physical Disability Team, as well as a consultant to Genetics, HIV and AIDS Comprehensive Care Clinic, Rheumatology, and Plastic Surgery. Affectionately known to her patients and their families as "Dr. Froggie", she was the architect of the HSC Humour Library, as well as the founder of the first Canadian fund for children with AIDS. She is a consultant to Health Canada in the areas of Health Promotion and Pediatric AIDS, and sits on the Steering Committee of the International Psychiatric Informatics Society, as well as the Professional Advisory Council of Hasbro Toys.
In the community, she has been actively involved with a number of volunteer organizations and support networks, including AboutFace, CANFAR, Concerned Kids, Alliance for Children and Television, Kids Help Phone, Metro Toronto Association for Community Living, and Star Tracks Talent Agency for the Disabled. She is a member of the Professional Advisory Board of Easter Seals Ontario.. As Founding President of the Ability OnLine Support Network, she realized her dream of "putting children with disabilities in touch with the world" via electronic mail.
In 1996, Dr. Lefebvre's contribution to children with disabilities and chronic illness was recognized by the Government of Ontario when she received its highest award, the Order of Ontario, and she has also been inducted into the Terry Fox Hall of Fame. Some of her other awards include, Women on the Move, Women Who Make a Difference, Easter Seal Gold Merit Award, and Variety Club Diamond Award. In 1999,
she became a member of the Order of Canada.
Also in 1999, Dr. Lefebvre and the co-founder of Ability OnLine, Brian Hillis, published "Taking Your Kids OnLine: How and When to Introduce Children to the Internet", published by McGraw-Hill Ryerson of Canada, available in most Canadian bookstores, as well as online at Chapters Canada, Indigo, Parentbooks, and Amazon.com.
